Amicalola Falls State Park

Amicalola Falls State Park

Amicalola Falls

At least once per year we visit Amicalola Falls State Park to hike to the waterfall and picnic.  It is perfect in the fall with the leaves changing colors and the view at the top.  Be prepared for a lot of stairs when do you this hick.  Going up to the top and back is around 1200 steps round trip.  But the view is spectacular and the falls are beautiful.

Burt’s Farm

If you go to Amicalola in the fall, make a point to visit Burt’s Farm.  It is just a minute down the road from the park, and has a fantastic pumpkin patch.  See more about Burt’s Farm.

Tips:

  • There are bathrooms and picnic tables / grills around the base of the trail, so it is worth bringing up a picnic for after the hike
  • If you visit Burt’s Farm in conjunction with your trip, make sure you go to Burt’s Farm first thing in the morning (to beat the crowd).  It is a huge attraction, so get that done first then go to Amicalola for the rest of the day.
  • There is a small trout pond in the upper parking lot area before the trail if you want to fish with kids.

Rock Ranch

We spend another fabulous day at the Rock Ranch with family this weekend. We had a blast!

Apple Picking in North GA

Apple Picking in North GA

Fall… the best time of the year!

We’ve gone to North Georgia every year to pick apples when the weather starts getting cool and the leaves start to fall.  We love fall.  It’s our favorite time of year.  And it’s always so fun to take the kids to pick a half bushel of apples as a family.

Red Apple Barn

We’ve been to several orchards, but our favorite is Red Apple Barn.  It is not as far as some of them, but it offers a tractor ride through the orchard, a wide variety of different kinds of apples for picking, great scenic views over the hills, and after picking they give you an apple doughnut and cider.  The shop offers all kinds of extra goodies you can buy from apple pies to jugs of cider.

Tybee Island, GA

We were at Tybee Island when they were filming the Spongebob movie, and since then it has become one of our favorite beach towns to visit.  The two best places to visit at Tybee are Fort Screven, Battery Garland (old fort and close to the lighthouse) and Tybee Beach Pier on the South end of the Island.

Tips:

  • Tybee is very close to Savannah, so if you plan a trip to Tybee, you might as well see Savannah too.
  • Be prepared to pay for parking
  • On the South end of the Island, there are a lot of great places to eat by the beach.
  • You can fish off the Pier by renting equipment there, or bringing your own… but Pier access is free.
  • Staying on Tybee Island can be a bit expensive, but it is easy to find accommodations outside of Savannah and Tybee at good prices and then drive a few minutes to each to visit.
