Perfect Mountain Weekend Getaway

Great Smoky Mountains National Park straddles the border between North Carolina and Tennessee.  The beautiful blue smoky hills roll into the horizon allowing you to follow them into the other state.  I’ve read the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in the country.  The drive through the Smokies is amazing, and it makes for a perfect weekend trip fro Atlanta.  Here are a couple to-do’s we’d recommend.

Newfound Gap

Newfound Gap is a mountain pass located near the center of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  The drive is gorgeous with several overlook pull-offs you can stop to take in the view and some good selfies.  At the main overlook, you can stand at the state line between North Carolina and Tennessee, follow a 2 mile trail on a hike, and take in the views.

Elevation: 5,049

Clingmans Dome

Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Tennessee at an elevation of 6,644, and the third highest mountain east of the Mississippi.  They have an observation tower on the summit that offers a 360 degree view of the Smokies and beyond for visitors willing to climb the steep half-mile walk to the top.  The trail is paved with great parking and makes for a nice family hike.  On clear days you can view over 100 miles.  There were low clouds hanging over the peak the day we hiked, so our views were hindered by the clouds.  We also crossed the Appalachian Trail during the hike to the summit.
